چکیده

Contamination of heavy metals has been a serious environmental problem due to increasing anthropogenic activities such as mining, smelting, livestock, landfills, waste dumps, and agriculture. Bioleaching experiments were conducted using native Bacillus cereus MAMPE19 BCG, isolated characterized from previous research, test removal arsenic (As) actual mining waste. Mineralogical characterization by XRD was performed identify mineral associations with As. The experimental design included bioleaching system agitated flasks (triplicate) the effects pH (5, 7, 9) pulp density (10, 15, 20%) evaluated. Finally, based on results ANOVA, that achieved highest percentage As dissolution selected scaled stirred tank bioreactor. composition mainly calcite (CaCO3), gismondine (CaAl2Si2O8·4(H2O)), akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7), silicon oxide (SiO2). Native dissolved 40.6 ± 4.9 37.4 2.7 % in 10 d, at 5 15%, respectively; 27.5 2.9% bioreactor supported significant statistical differences.

Characterization of an a-Amylase with Broad Temperature Activity from an Acid-Neutralizing Bacillus cereus Strain

Bacillus sp. GUF8, isolated from acidic soil samples of a tea farm was identified as Bacillus cereus, based on 16S rDNA sequencing and standard bacterial identification methods. Following optimization of enzyme production, the resulting α-amylase was purified by acetone precipitation and ion exchange chromatography. Consequently, thermostability and kinetic parameters of the purified enzyme wer...

Preventing acid mine drainage from mine tailings

Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. Portugal was a prosper tungsten producer from the beginning of the XX century, having its apogee during World War II. Nowadays there are mill...

Comparison of cytotoxin cytK promoters from Bacillus cereus strain ATCC 14579 and from a B. cereus food-poisoning strain.

The cytotoxin CytK produced by Bacillus cereus is believed to be involved in food-borne diseases. The transcriptional activity of the cytK promoter region in a food-poisoning strain was studied using a reporter gene and compared with that in the reference B. cereus strain ATCC 14579. In the food-poisoning strain, cytK is more strongly transcribed, possibly explaining the pathogenicity. The glob...
